Meople News: Bauhaus at the Center of the Earth

Fantasy Flight Games

Didn’t we just have on those? The Trollfens is a new expansion for Descent: Journeys in the Dark, but smaller than the previous ones: only five new quests and two new hero classes come in the box. But this time, the Overlord will have a new class to pick as well, as an Infector he’ll spread filth and disease to stop the heroes. By the sound of it, you’ll spend less time in dungeons in The Trollfens and more time exploring the marshes: we shall call it Descent: Journeys in the Damp.

Battlestar Galactica: Daybreak is going to make things very interesting for everyone involved. Mutiny is in the air, and that brings more changes than two new game boards. Just like the final season of the TV series, Daybreak will leave you more uncertain than ever who is loyal to humanity and who is secretly a toaster. Cylon. The new Mutiny Cards have powerful, helpful effects, but they all come at a high price as well, and when a player uses one that restocks your food supply but also summons a small Cylon fleet, then you can be excused for wondering who’s side he’s really on. With the Mutiny mechanic, the uncertainty who is on your side and who isn’t, always at the core of Battlestar Galactica, will be even greater.

The latest preview for Planet Steam gives you some insight into the mechanics of the resource market in the game – if you still need those insights, you might be familiar with the slightly older German edition LudoArt / Heidelberger, after all. The market in Planet Steam is, mechanically, not very complex, but using it to your advantage is an entirely different matter.

Level 99 Games

The latest and last preview for Seven Card Slugfest reveals not only another brawler but also another type of card. Arena cards change the rules for this round, sometimes creating a more strategic game, sometimes an even more chaotic one. And they’ll certainly keep things interesting.

Guildhall: Job Faire expands the base game with six new jobs, among them the Bricklayer, the Hunter and the Peddler. No word yet what those new jobs will do, but you won’t have to wait long, Job Faire is to be released this summer.

Sit Down!

Sit Down! are running a Kickstarter campaign for their newest game Rockwell, where each player takes control of a mining crew on its way to THE CENTER OF THE EARTH! No, really, that’s where they are going. I would argue about the wisdom of that plan, but at least the way there is profitable, each step of the way you will find rich veins of resources. Which you will, unfortunately, have to share because you’ll rarely have the chance – or the ability – to dig to the next tile on your own. You’ll also be able to upgrade your mining operation in different ways. To me, the plan to make this game sounds much smarter than the one to dig to THE CENTER OF THE EARTH!

Moonster Games

The rules for Koryo are now available online, but only if you speak French, or after Moonster Games fixes the link to the English rules. But even if you can’t read them, the preview pictures are worth a look.

Mayfair Games

This one is for all you Trekkies out there. With the Star Trek Catan: Federation Space Map Set you’ll be able to play Star Trek Catan on the original map of federation space, as seen in Captain Tiberius T. Kirk’s ready room. They must be talking about the original Kirk here, because I don’t think the new one ever entered that room. Exploring the original galaxy, you’ll also find new ways to score victory points, according to the new-ways-to-score Victory Point tokens included in the map pack.

bauhaus, to be released later this year, is an abstract area control game with a visual style based on the style of the German Bauhaus, which should be familiar to anyone who studied some form of Design, at least. You must try to claim areas for yourself by placing markers inside and creating borders according to the cards available. At least if my school French doesn’t fail me.

Indie Boards and Cards

If you were jealous of us when we reviewed Haggis because you didn’t have one, now’s your chance to fix that.

Queen Games

David Ausloos’s Dark Darker Darkest is a very different game from Queen Games’ usual style: it’s a dark, dangerous survival horror game and it comes with miniatures for players and adversaries. But who am I to complain about a different style in a game that lets me and some friends stop the Zombie Apocalypse? That’s exactly what you set out to do in Dark Darker Darkest: break into the house of crazy Doc Mortimer and take the antidote from him, before it’s too late. Like many new games by Queen, Dark Darker Darkest is on Kickstarter.
