Meople News: Epic Old Man Battle at Mount Steamshark

No gaming for us this weekend. My family has the tradition of  pumpkin-themed debauchery one day in fall: 15 to 20 people, eight to ten dishes, all pumpkin. So we spent all day yesterday in my mother’s minuscule kitchen and not at the gaming table. Fortunately we enjoy cooking almost as much as gaming, so we still had a great weekend. Lets see what happened in the world of games then.

Treefrog Games

Old Men of the Forest, the card game by Martin Wallace, was available in Essen this year. If you couldn’t make it there, the game is now also available for order. It’s not a terribly deep game, but remember that all profit from the game goes to the Orang Utan Foundation UK, and protecting the apes is worth the price of the game.

Fantasy Flight Games

It’s almost time for the release of A Game of Thrones: The Board Game Second Edition (Christian Petersen) – in fact, you might be able to have it as early as this weekend if you attend one of FFG’s events – and in another preview we are introduced to what may be the strongest tie between the novels and the game: the strengths of the different houses and their leader.

Cryptozoic

When a game comes along with a name like Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mount Skullzfyre you know two things about it: it’s not going to take itself seriously, and I’m not going to type that whole name every time I mention it. In Epic Spell Wars the titular Battle Wizards meet at the equally titular Mount Skullzfyre to blast the stuffing out of each other. To do that, you can use tools and artefacts, but mainly you’ll be using destructive spells created by combining three cards that you fling at each other. Like “Whirly-Do’s Burst-o-Ramic Meatier Swarm” in the announcement, or “Midnight Merlin’s Devilicious Exorcism“.

Sirlin Games

David Sirlin has given a lot of thought to rules that forbid players from talking about their cards in cooperative games, and he has a strong opinion about them (spoiler: he’s not a big fan). When he introduced an optional traitor mechanic to Flash Duel 2nd Edition, he came up with his own solution: when the traitor finds out what cards you are holding, he can use that information to kill you. Simple and deadly.

Hurrican / Asmodee

Asmodee’s video introduction to Dr. Shark does such a great job, I’ll just leave you to watch it instead of writing stuff down.

Kickstarter

Tasty Minstrel Games are gathering money to make their Kings of Air and Steam the best it can be. I’m looking forward to this game a lot, but I’m a sucker for everything steampunk, so don’t take my word for it and see for yourself. The project is already funded, but if you scroll down on the Kickstarter page, you’ll see that TMG set some additional goals for overfunding to make the game even more awesome.
