  • Istanbul

The second nominee for this year’s Kennerspiel des Jahres, Istanbul makes you run around the bazaar district of the titular city in a desperate search for rubies. Why rubies, you ask? No idea, to be honest, but as the game progresses it turns into a frantic search for your lost assistants, anyway. Leaving your assitants behind to work, then gathering them up again and leaving them somewhere else, that’s the core of Istanbul.

  • Sigismundus Augustus

Long, deep and historical games are not uncommon, but they usually focus on war. Sigismundus Augustus goes a different route, it’s all about Polish Politics under the King with the game’s name. A completely different type of challenge, but just as tricky to win. But how much fun is history without bloodshed?

  • Junkyard Races

Many here will recall playing one of the many incarnations of Mario Kart on their Nintendo console. Playing with a few people around the same TV was great fun, but had one big downside: it was not a board game. Now, finally, the same kind of fun can be had around the table, with up to 8 people in Junkyard Races. And oh boy is it fun.

  • Theseus: The Dark Orbit

In space, no one can hear you scream. Which is a shame, because the frustrated screams of your opponents really are fun. And you’d have plenty of opportunity to hear them in Theseus: The Dark Orbit if it wasn’t set in space. A simple movement rule that gives your opponent the chance to influence where you can and can’t go is the basis for a tense science fiction game that would have Sigourney Weaver seriously worried about her chance to survive.

  • Penny Arcade: Gamers vs. Evil

Penny Arcade is a name that you simply can’t get around when looking into computer games on the Internet. It’s one of the most famous webcomics ever. After computer games, conventions and god knows what else, they are also breaking into board and card games. Or are they just selling their name to make their fanbase buy a bad game?

  • Big Badaboom!

Goblins no have bombs. That no good. Goblins need bombs. You Goblins will see bombs, will look at bombs, will learn bombs? Why? Because Big Boss Necromancer Goblin say, that why. Go learn bomb, not worry if bomb explode, Big Boss bring you back, no problem.

  • Hanabi

A very unique card game in more than one way. You’re not only holding your cards the wrong way around, you’ll also be thinking about how you communicate in completely new ways. That’s not bad for a game that only takes 25 cards in the right order to win.

  • Sapiens

The year is god-knows-when BCE. The first people are spreading across the plains and forests looking for two things: food and shelter. Their most important tool in this dangerous voyage are Dominoes-like tiles they use to map out the surroundings. Okay, no, they didn’t really do that. You do that when playing Sapiens, map out the territory for your tribe to prosper.
