  • Vineta

“Whom the gods wish to destroy, they first drive mad,” as the saying goes. Turns out, that’s not true. They just drown them and destroy their city, and in Vineta, so can you.

  • Alcatraz: The Scapegoat

They say no one ever escaped from Alcatraz. If you want to be the first, you will have to work together with the other inmates. But watch out, or you might be left behind, because for all its cooperation required, Alcatraz: The Scapegoat is anything but a cooperative game.

  • Viticulture

Move to Italy, by a vineyard, grow wine, that’s not a plan that appeals to me. But put the same thing in a boardgame and suddenly I’m interested. Viticulture is a classic worker placement game about running a vineyard, from growing to selling wine, while giving tours and entertaining visitors on the side.

  • Pamplona – Viva San Fermín!

The Running of the Bulls in Pamplona is a world-famous festival, moreso since Hemmingway wrote about it. But its rarely used as a theme for boardgames. Pamplona – Viva San Fermín does make use of it.

  • 1984: Animal Farm

The new world leaders after the 1984 revolution: Pandas, Eagles, Frogs, Bears and Pigs. You may or may not be surprised to learn that, other than the species, nothing has changed. The world is struggling in a five-way Cold War, permanently on the brink of thermonuclear destruction, and your goal in this game is not to save the world and bring lasting peace – except maybe by eliminating the competition. 1984: Animal Farm may be one of the games least conductive to maintaining friendship since Diplomacy.

  • Bang!

Welcome to the Wild West! You might not want to get to comfortable on your horse and take some cover behind that barrel there, the west is particularly wild today. Not only is everyone shooting everyone else, no one is even sure who is on their side. But in a real Western, that matters less than putting lead in the air, so get shooting.

  • Colt Express

A train robbery can really ruin your day if you’re one of the passengers. Six bandits trying to rob your train at the same time, but working against each other? With a Marshal thrown in ot fend them off? That’s actually pretty hilarious to watch. And on the gorgeous 3D train of Colt Express, it’s even more fun. All of the chaos, in three dimensions.

  • Space Alert

Space is big. Big and empty. That’s what our science teachers told us. It’s also dead – and deadly – wrong. Wherever our exploration vessel shows up, nasty things are just waiting to blow us up. To get back in one piece, all players have to cooperate and deal with a tight time limit while the computer is yelling at them about everything going wrong.
