  • Power Grid: The First Sparks

For the 10th anniversary of the legendary Power Grid, designer Friedemann Friese came up with something special: he transported the games mechanics to the Stone Age. Gone are the days of burning coal, now you go hunt mammoths.

  • The Game

This is the game you will never find on Google. Because the name of the game is The Game, and that’s just not very distinctive. The Game is a cooperative card game that was nominated for the 2015 Spiel des Jahres. It’s small and abstract, but that doesn’t say anything about how much fun it is.

  • Blokus

Yet another easy, quick and very clever game: your only goal in Blokus is to place all your tiles on the board, and the only restriction is that they must touch your other tiles, but only by a corner. Oh, and three other people are trying to do the same and get in your way.

  • Arkham Horror

Everything is peaceful in the small town in New England. Nothing bad has happened yet this week. But it’s only monday, 2:00 am. And there we go, a gate to another world opens, monsters start pouring out. The inhabitants of Arkham suffer through a lot, if anything bad happens, it happens to them. Every time. They feel the Arkham Horror.

  • Catan Histories: Merchants of Europe

The Settlers of Catan have come a long way. From their little fictional island all the way to the USA in Trails to Rails and then all the way back to Europe to become Merchants of Europe. It’s been a long, strange trip.

  • Bruges

Stefan Feld is at it again, exploring the possibilities to combine luck and strategy in one game. This time, his exploration takes him to Belgium, the city of Bruges to be precise, where you build canals, work on your political career and, most important of all, make influential friends. But even those friends will have a hard time helping you when dice and cards are not your friends.

  • Caylus

Caylus is not quite the first worker placement game, but it did did its part in making the mechanic popular. But Caylus adds many things beyond that, the options can feel a bit threatening at times.

  • Witch of Salem

The Witch of Salem is one of many board games set in Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, and its art really makes that world come to life. Four scholars of the paranormal set out to keep the Great Old Ones imprisoned in R’lyeh. Will they succeed?
