  • Alcatraz: The Scapegoat

They say no one ever escaped from Alcatraz. If you want to be the first, you will have to work together with the other inmates. But watch out, or you might be left behind, because for all its cooperation required, Alcatraz: The Scapegoat is anything but a cooperative game.

  • Age of Thieves

Age of Thieves is not a game about collecting victory points or anything mundane like that. It is about nothing less but fleeing a city under a full-fledged state of alarm – with guards roaming the streets and alleys – while casually carrying the most valuable jewels you can out of the city.

  • Guildhall: Job Faire

Guildhall was a surprise release by Alderac in 2012, there were no announcements or anything, the game was just there. Now the expansion/sequel Job Faire is out and was much less secretive. I guess we could all see the expansion coming. Just like its predecessor, its better if you don’t think about the game to thematically, if the medieval guild system had really worked like this game we’d still only have five bricklayers in the world, and where would we be then, as a civilisation? We probably wouldn’t be hating our fellow man over a card game, that’s where. And that would mean we’re not playing Guildhall.

  • Greenland

Greenland is a pretty hostile environment for human beings, and survival is at stake there every day. Not so much nowadays, but people have been living there since long before packaged food and electric heating. The game Greenland gives you some idea just how dangerous the place is: careful planning and good tactics will go a long way, but a bit of bad luck can still wipe out your people.

  • The Agents

When a big secret agency shuts down, many shady people suddenly find themselves unemployed. The Agency was the biggest secret agency there was, and dealing with their leftover agents to make a profit is your job in The Agents.

  • Rattle, Battle, Grab the Loot

Ignacy Trzewiczek and Portal Games are usually known for heavy games, but with Rattle, Battle, Grab the Loot they ventured into family game territory. Here you wage sea battles by throwing a metric ton of dice into the game box and then using more or less improbable ship upgrades to fight. For family-friendliness, players don’t fight against one another but compete who can capture or sink the most non-player ships.

  • Perpetual-Motion Machine

Perpetual-Motion Machine, the new game by Ted Alspach, has nothing to do with physics, despite the title. Instead, it’s a set collecting game shooting for poker hands, where playing a hand lets you improve one attribute of your game play.

  • Dixit 2

Sometimes, game expansion are best when they change nothing at all. If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it, as they say.
Is this nugget of wisdom true for Dixit 2?
