Kill Doctor Lucky

25 April, 2010 Kai Reviews

“Kill Doctor Lucky” is not only the name of the game, it’s also the only victory condition. Be the first to strike down the old academic in this fun little filler game.

  • Bohemian Villages

Ah, Bohemia, land of the dice, where the fate of whole families hinges on a few rolls of the metaphorical bones. The locals didn’t mention anything about that when we passed through on our vacation, but it’s probably one of those things you don’t discuss with outsiders. Being a village boy myself, I can relate to that. When someone passed through our village, we also didn’t tell him who’s life had been ruined by the dice. But in Bohemia, or at least in Reiner Stockhausen’s Bohemian Villages, the dice have a much more direct influence on the not-quite-meeple-people’s lives. The dice decide what career they can take and sometimes to which village they have to move.

  • Asara

Asara, the city of spires. The Caliph has called 4 famous architects to give the city more spires, higher spires, more colourful spires. In only four years, we are to fill the city with soaring towers, but funds and workers are limited.

  • The Dwarf King

Dwarves, Goblins and Knights are all united in a trick-taking card game that sounds easy and simple, there’s not even a trump colour. But The Dwarf King has changing scoring rules, wacky special cards and the best illustrations I’ve seen in a card game recently.

  • Robo Rally

Racing games often have a strong feeling of roll your dice and may the luckier one win. Not so Robo Rally. To triumph in this race, you’ll need a good sense of direction and an even better ability at planning your moves.

  • Five Tribes

Bruno Cathala and Days of Wonder take us to Naqala, a magical kingdom straight out of Arabian Nights if Arabian Nights had included meeples. Which it should have. Five Tribes is one of the most talked about games of the last year, and after testing it extensively we understand why.

  • Smash Up: The Obligatory Cthulhu Set

For a game as mired in pop culture as Smash Up, it was unavoidable that the internets favorite Old One would have an appearance at some point. But is The Obligatory Chulhu Set as great as the Old One himself, or will it cause your descent into madness?

  • Eight-Minute Empire

Even the most insane, megalomanic despot will usually plan for a few months of war to conquer the whole world. Eight minutes is optimistic, to say the least. But that’s exactly what you’re going to do in Eight-Minute Empire: carve your name into the world, in mile high letter, in eight to twenty minutes. That’s shorter than your court-appointed painter will take to paint your regal countenance.

  • Cargotrain

Trains, pick-up-and-deliver mechanic, set collection. All that doesn’t sound new, the mechanics have been used and even combined before, and there are more than a few train games out there. But Cargotrain takes those simple ingredients and mixes them up into something tasty and fun.
