  • Robo Rally

Racing games often have a strong feeling of roll your dice and may the luckier one win. Not so Robo Rally. To triumph in this race, you’ll need a good sense of direction and an even better ability at planning your moves.

  • Mascarade

Mascarade is proof that a good game doesn’t need many components. With just 13 cards and some paper coins, Bruno Faidutti created an intense game of bluff and confusion that works for up to 13 players.

  • K2

Mountaineering is not much used as a theme in boardgames. After trying K2, I really wonder why because it’s tense, exciting and deadly. There are no empty moves here, every turn has important decisions. A worthy nominee for Kennerspiel des Jahres 2012?

  • Identik

Identik advertises itself as “the drawing game for people who can’t draw”. Given my innate artistic ability, I consider that a challenge. Turn out that it actually works: in this hectic party style game, if you can manage stick figures, you can do well. Provided you get obscure details like the number of ears in the picture or the size of the sun right.

  • Dixit

Dixit is a very creative communication game that has you describe and guess at picture cards. It’s much more fun than this description sounds, fun enough for this year’s Spiel des Jahres award.

  • Mai-Star

Geisha are a fascinating and confusing part of Japanese culture. Women that you pay to be with for their conversational skills, or their talents in the arts, or even for their ability to play games. They are personal entertainers, but with a long history and, to us, strange customes.
Mai-Star, a game about geisha, will probably not do a thing to make you understand them better. But it will entertain you for half an hour, and then maybe for some more.

  • The Prodigals Club

Being rich, influential and groomed for political office, that must be such an incredibly boring life. Why is it that the lower classes get all the fun? Well, you’re not going to let them have it without you, and if you have to get rid of your wealth and your good reputation to join them, then so be it. That’s why you and some equally rich and dimwitted friends started the Prodigals Club, a contest of who can most effectively ruin their future.

  • Old Men of the Forest

Old Men of the Forest is a charity game: all its profits go to the Orangutan Foundation UK. So don’t think of this as a review, its more a “bringing it to your attention”. You can support the apes – never call them monkeys, they hate that – and gain a light card game in the process.
