Portal Publishing You probably noticed in the review that we really liked Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island, but[…]

Do word guessing games all feel the same to you? I can promise you, this one won’t. You’ll still be guessing words, it wouldn’t be a word guessing game otheriwse. But how those words are explained for you to guess is new and, actually, pretty awesome.

  • Mord im Arosa

Mord im Arosa is a very, very unusual mystery game. There is no deduction element at all and neither are you supposed to hide your identity. Instead, the whole game is about listening where the clue cubes land in the tower when they are dropped in.
    Unusual? Yes. Fun? Find out.

  • Codenames

I still think Vlaada Chvátil has this little check list on his desk where he goes “Oh, here’s a genre I didn’t make a game in yet” and then just sets out to design a game for that genre. And whatever genre he picks, he’s good at it. The latest example of that is Codenames, a word association game. And if you think that word games are boring, like I did, then maybe Vlaada can change your mind.

  • Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island

Beign shipwrecked is bad. Being shipwrecked on a deserted island is worse. Being shipwrecked on the Cursed Island? That sounds like trouble. Enough trouble, actually, that we should all work together. And here we are in Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island, a cooperative adventure game.

  • AquaSphere

Stefan Feld is back, and he’s taking us on a trip under the sea this time. Because it’s better down where it’s wetter. But you won’t have time to watch the singing and dancing crustaceans, there’s science to be done. You only have two people working for you, an Engineer and a Scientist, but together with their swarm of robots they will do science, collect crystals and catch invading octopodes.

  • Penny Arcade: Gamers vs. Evil

Penny Arcade is a name that you simply can’t get around when looking into computer games on the Internet. It’s one of the most famous webcomics ever. After computer games, conventions and god knows what else, they are also breaking into board and card games. Or are they just selling their name to make their fanbase buy a bad game?

  • Viticulture

Move to Italy, by a vineyard, grow wine, that’s not a plan that appeals to me. But put the same thing in a boardgame and suddenly I’m interested. Viticulture is a classic worker placement game about running a vineyard, from growing to selling wine, while giving tours and entertaining visitors on the side.

  • Old Men of the Forest

Old Men of the Forest is a charity game: all its profits go to the Orangutan Foundation UK. So don’t think of this as a review, its more a “bringing it to your attention”. You can support the apes – never call them monkeys, they hate that – and gain a light card game in the process.
