  • Dixit

Dixit is a very creative communication game that has you describe and guess at picture cards. It’s much more fun than this description sounds, fun enough for this year’s Spiel des Jahres award.

  • Smash Up

The ultimate question about life, the universe and everything can finally be answered. Who would win in a fight, Pirates or Ninjas? 42. Sorry, doesn’t make sense after all. But at least you can answer all the other big questions as well. Dinosaurs or Robots? Aliens or Zombies? All that and more now has an answer, and the answer is Smash Up.

  • Kingpin

Kingpin is a two-player strategy game about crime syndicates at war: with limited time, space and people you try to overrun the enemy’s HQ or take control of the central No Man’s Land. It’s not as easy as it sounds, there is more thinking involved than you might expect.

  • The X-Files

It’s safe to say that The X-Files was one of the most popular TV series created to date. (Or maybe still is, with the 2016 revival mini series ending on a huge cliffhanger.) So finding a new The X-Files boardgame published 13 years after the last episode of the original series was aired wasn’t a big surprise. There are millions of people out there with nostalgia for agents Mulder and Scully digging up alien conspiracies, and nostalgia sells. If you know me, then you know that’s why I’m skeptical towards licensed games in general. Nostalgia sells irrespective of quality. But there are good games made on a license, so lets see what side of that spectrum Kevin Wilson’s The X-Files falls on.

  • A Fistful of Penguins

If “A Fistful of Penguins” makes you think of a western set in the Antarctic, then you’re in for a disappointment. If you’re looking for a family-friendly dice game, then you could do much worse.

  • Hanabi

A very unique card game in more than one way. You’re not only holding your cards the wrong way around, you’ll also be thinking about how you communicate in completely new ways. That’s not bad for a game that only takes 25 cards in the right order to win.

  • Village

Village is a medieval countryside life simulator. Only it cuts away the boring 99% of it and lets you make the decisions that shape your fameeply’s lives. Should the new kid learn a craft? Go into politics? Maybe go and see the world. Everything is possible, and everything might earn you a spot in the village chronice – or in an unmarked grave.

  • SOS Titanic

I imagine that sometimes the pitch for a new board game must sound a lot like the pitch for the weird blockbuster movie of a year. “It’s a Patience game, only you can play it with friends and it’s about rescuing people from the Titanic.” It probably wasn’t an easy sale, but here it is: SOS Titanic, the multiplayer solitaire game with superpowers.
