  • Broom Service

Potion delivery is big business. A bit like pizza delivery, only with more magic, and on broomsticks. That is your business in Broom Service, but the competition is tough and you won’t have time to let your brooms cool down before the day is over. So keep a close eye on what your opponents are doing and use your witches and druids to deliver the most potions before the game is over.

  • Race for the Galaxy

Not the newest game we reviewed recently, Race for the Galaxy was first published in 2007. It’s still a very good and popular game, though and with the new expansion Alien Artifacts coming later this year now is a good time to have a look at it.

  • Quarto

An abstract strategy game by Gigamic from 1991. The rules are explained in about 2 minutes, but that doesn’t mean the game is easy to play. Expect to put some brain juice in order to win.

  • The Big Book of Madness

You didn’t get your Hogwarts letter, did you? Yeah, me neither. I heard good things about the Elementary College, though. They have the Book of Madness in the library. Yes, THE Book of Madness. I have heard really, really bad things about their health and safety procedures, but they teach their students how to really work together and deal with a crisis. I’ll apply there right now!

  • Council of Four

Some countries just don’t manage to form a stable government, but the unnamed kingdom of Council of Four is ridiculous even by those standards. Influential merchants, the players, exchange councilmen in any way that best serves their interest. If the current council can’t be bullied into writing a business permit, they just replace them. And whoever does that best wins the game.

  • Trickerion: Legends of Illusion

There are many boardgames about wizards throwing fireballs at things, but very few about the other kind of magic, the kind where skilled performers go on stage and make their audience think that magic might be real. One of those few games is Trickerion, an intensely strategic worker placement game with many details to keep track of and very limited …. well, everything. Between limited resources, limited time and limited space, every decision is tough. Just the way we like it.

  • Kingdom Builder

In this year’s Spiel des Jahres, the King asks you to construct villages for his Kingdom. But his subjects are not always guided by sanity when they write their wishlist where the villages should go. Some of them have truly special needs, and then they keep contradicting each other. It’s enough to drive a city planer insane.

  • Andromeda

Anyone who grew up with a sibling will know the situation: there is ice cream, or cake, or something to be had, one of you had to split it and the other one would get first pick. As it turns out, that system not only works for ice cream but for exploring space ships as well, because that’s how you get your actions in Andromeda.
