Video Review: Enchanters

13 February, 2018 Kai Reviews, Video Reviews

Swords of Fire. Shields of Stone. Daggers of Poison. All essential heroing equipment, but usually just props. Until now, that is. Enchanters is a game all about the Xs of Y without which a self-respecting hero never leaves home. I hope you enjoy our latest video review!

  • Patchwork

Uwe Rosenberg is well known for his deep, complex games like Agricola, Glass Road or Fields of Arle. But those are not all he does, he’s equally skilled at small and deceptively simple looking games. In this one, you don’t have to feed your starving farmers, you don’t work and pray in a monastery, you don’t even sell your vegetables at the gates of Loyang. All you have to do is simply make a patchwork blanket.

  • Pamplona – Viva San Fermín!

The Running of the Bulls in Pamplona is a world-famous festival, moreso since Hemmingway wrote about it. But its rarely used as a theme for boardgames. Pamplona – Viva San Fermín does make use of it.

  • Maximum Throwdown

Are you one of those people that throw down their cards in anger when they lose a game? Well, in this one you throw down your cards OR you lose the game.

  • Blokus 3D

It’s the trend of these last two years to slap a “3D” on everything and double the price. We now have 3D movies that no one ever asked for and that force you to do unnatural things with your eyes. We have 3D televisions just to watch those movies. And we have Blokus 3D.

  • Five Tribes

Bruno Cathala and Days of Wonder take us to Naqala, a magical kingdom straight out of Arabian Nights if Arabian Nights had included meeples. Which it should have. Five Tribes is one of the most talked about games of the last year, and after testing it extensively we understand why.

  • Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride (here in the German edition “Zug um Zug”) has become a classic in the few years since it was first released. It spawned many variants that play on different maps and add new mechanics.

  • Alchemists

Combining boardgames with mobile apps into a game that people actually want to play is the current Philosophers’ Stone and Holy Grail rolled into one for game designers and publishers. The Philosophers’ Grail, maybe. Previous attempts have had lukewarm success at best. But Alchemists is the first in a new wave of games with companion app, and it might just have found the magic formula how do it right.

  • Kilt Castle

From haggis to caber toss, Scotland is full of traditions that seem odd to an outsider. But the oddest tradition has recently been discovered by Günter Burkhardt: when the Scots build a castle for their clan, it’s not a collaborative effort like you would expect. Every builder wants floors in his or her own color to top of all the tower. The resulting castle is neither very hospitable to live in nor does it have great defensive value, but it is a home for your clan, and someone made a lot of money building it.
