Video Review: Enchanters

13 February, 2018 Kai Reviews, Video Reviews

Swords of Fire. Shields of Stone. Daggers of Poison. All essential heroing equipment, but usually just props. Until now, that is. Enchanters is a game all about the Xs of Y without which a self-respecting hero never leaves home. I hope you enjoy our latest video review!

Stefan Feld is back, and he’s taking us on a trip under the sea this time. Because it’s better down where it’s wetter. But you won’t have time to watch the singing and dancing crustaceans, there’s science to be done. You only have two people working for you, an Engineer and a Scientist, but together with their swarm of robots they will do science, collect crystals and catch invading octopodes.

  • Viticulture

Move to Italy, by a vineyard, grow wine, that’s not a plan that appeals to me. But put the same thing in a boardgame and suddenly I’m interested. Viticulture is a classic worker placement game about running a vineyard, from growing to selling wine, while giving tours and entertaining visitors on the side.

  • Burger Up

Warning! Do not read this review while hungry. You’re about to read a many words about burgers, which will make you hungry to play Burger Up, but also to go out and eat at that grass-fed beef only burger place across town.

  • Pocket Madness

Many of us gamers have spent countless hours of our lives fighting the Great Old Ones. But do we even know why? Have we done the research on that one? Maybe under the reign of Cthulhu, Azathoth and their like there would be free cotton candy for everyone. You now have the chance to do that research. But be careful, the knowledge of the Old Ones quickly leads to insanity – as you will find out when playing Bruno Cathala and Ludovic Maublanc’s Pocket Madness.

  • 7 Wonders: Cities

The second expansion for Antoine Bauza’s Kennerspiel des Jahres is 7 Wonders: Cities, and it’s all about Peace and Money. Or maybe Peace and Theft. With two new wonders, 9 new cards per age, new guilds and new leaders, the expansion mixes things up a bit.

  • The Kingdoms of Crusaders

The Crusades, the attempt to conquer Jerusalem for Christianity, were a bloody period of war. They’re a prime setting for wargames – I’m sure a few have been made – but finding a card game in the setting did surprise me. With a unique illustration style and a simple area majority mechanic, it’s an unusual take on the Crusades.

  • Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar

The Maya people had a very sophisticated calendar system, consisting of multiple counts with different lengths. One of these counts is the 260-day tzolk’in. It’s also the driving force in the game, everything is moved by the turning of the tzolk’in gear, and timing your actions to make the best use of that is essential.

  • Sigismundus Augustus

Long, deep and historical games are not uncommon, but they usually focus on war. Sigismundus Augustus goes a different route, it’s all about Polish Politics under the King with the game’s name. A completely different type of challenge, but just as tricky to win. But how much fun is history without bloodshed?
