  • Havana

Havana is a card game with some extra goodies. The goal is to restore the city of Havana to its pre-revolution glory. Action cards are a valuable resource because, once discarded, they only come back when you used them all. Turn order play a big role and is not easy to manage. And worst of all, it’s tied to the actions you can take.

  • Mundus Novus

Mundus Novus is, despite its trade with the new world theme, a light set collection game with a complex(ish) trading mechanic and a bit of card based progress.

  • The Dwarf King

Dwarves, Goblins and Knights are all united in a trick-taking card game that sounds easy and simple, there’s not even a trump colour. But The Dwarf King has changing scoring rules, wacky special cards and the best illustrations I’ve seen in a card game recently.

  • Pandemic: The Cure

With the amazing, ongoing success of cooperative game Pandemic, it’s no surprise that there are not only a number of expansions but also a few spin-off games with a similar theme and sharing the name. Pandemic: The Cure is one such game, it recreates the classic Pandemic as a dice game: lighter and faster but with all the original’s elements still there.

  • Spellbound

The Master Wizards all told you, don’t mess with Baba Yaga. But of course you wouldn’t listen, she is only one witch, what could she possibly do to you. And now you find yourself in the Wilderness, a few days missing from your memory and horribly disfigured, with parts of your body shrunken and grown completely out of proportion. And not in a way that you’d find advantageous. Your only way back to full humanoidity goes through Baba Yaga.

  • Orleans

Thing-building games are still going strong. Deck-building games are the most popular of the bunch, but dice-building games and bag-building games have lots of fans, too. With Orleans one bag-building game has made the Kennerspiel des Jahres nominations this year and it really represents the cream of the genre. To become the most successful leader in medieval France, you need tight management of the followers in your bag.

  • Penny Arcade: Gamers vs. Evil

Penny Arcade is a name that you simply can’t get around when looking into computer games on the Internet. It’s one of the most famous webcomics ever. After computer games, conventions and god knows what else, they are also breaking into board and card games. Or are they just selling their name to make their fanbase buy a bad game?

  • Cargotrain

Trains, pick-up-and-deliver mechanic, set collection. All that doesn’t sound new, the mechanics have been used and even combined before, and there are more than a few train games out there. But Cargotrain takes those simple ingredients and mixes them up into something tasty and fun.
