  • Codenames

I still think Vlaada Chvátil has this little check list on his desk where he goes “Oh, here’s a genre I didn’t make a game in yet” and then just sets out to design a game for that genre. And whatever genre he picks, he’s good at it. The latest example of that is Codenames, a word association game. And if you think that word games are boring, like I did, then maybe Vlaada can change your mind.

  • The Great Zimbabwe

It’s not easy becoming king. Especially not when all the craftsmen work for other tribes, without them your monuments don’t grow and even your gods make it harder for you to win. You’ll have to do a lot of thinking to rule over The Great Zimbabwe.

  • Steam Park

In Roboburg, the robotic inhabitants work every day of the year, without vacations, without weekends. Except for six days every year when the robo fair comes to town. Then all the robots go and have fun on the fair rides. There’s a lot of money to be made for you as a fair owner, that’s for sure. If you can just attract the right crowd.

  • Five Tribes

Bruno Cathala and Days of Wonder take us to Naqala, a magical kingdom straight out of Arabian Nights if Arabian Nights had included meeples. Which it should have. Five Tribes is one of the most talked about games of the last year, and after testing it extensively we understand why.

  • Orleans

Thing-building games are still going strong. Deck-building games are the most popular of the bunch, but dice-building games and bag-building games have lots of fans, too. With Orleans one bag-building game has made the Kennerspiel des Jahres nominations this year and it really represents the cream of the genre. To become the most successful leader in medieval France, you need tight management of the followers in your bag.

  • Global – The Game

Global is a modern day reborn Monopoly that attempts to stimulate discussion on environmental and socio-economic problems.

  • Asara

Asara, the city of spires. The Caliph has called 4 famous architects to give the city more spires, higher spires, more colourful spires. In only four years, we are to fill the city with soaring towers, but funds and workers are limited.

  • The Gnomes of Zavandor

Zavandor, the land of gem mining. After Mines of Zavandor, Gnomes of Zavandor is the second mining-themed set title in the fantasy world. Unlike its predecessor, Gnomes of Zavandor has a strictly economical engineat its core.
