  • Forbidden Island

Thousands of years ago, the Archaean empire was at the height of its power. They created four artefacts that could control the very elements. But power, as everyone learns sooner or later, is no guarantee for survival. And so it is, a long time later, a small group of modern-day adventurers that set out to retrieve the legendary treasures from the Forbidden Island.

  • Prêt-à-Porter

The world of fashion is not a usual setting for boardgames, but Prêt-à-Porter nails it on the first try. It was nominated for Polish Game of the Year this year, and this year the whole world can enjoy the English edition.

  • Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King

I admit, I didn’t expect that one day a traditional, competitive eurogame would be in the majority for the Kennerspiel des Jahres selection. But here we are, next to Pandemic Legacy and T.I.M.E. Stories, both cooperative games with a limited number of replays in the box Isle of Skye is the only competitive game with virtually unlimited replayability. Lets have a look if it’s worthy of the nomination.

  • Onitama

There once was an onmyo master, a teller of fortune and summoner of spirits. This onmyo master had two children, both thinking only they deserve to inherit his title. And so the two children fight, with the spirits they summon, over who is the greater summoner and thus deserving of the title. That’s the short story behind the Onitama, an abstract game that barely takes longer than telling its story.

  • Discworld: Ankh-Morpork

Space. The Final Frontier. These are the adventures of giant turtle Great A’tuin, her four elephant companions standing on her shell and the millions of people living on the world they carry. This is the Discworld, and that muddy brown spot over there is Ankh-Morpork, home to a million people and more drama than any other city in the multiverse.

  • Cargotrain

Trains, pick-up-and-deliver mechanic, set collection. All that doesn’t sound new, the mechanics have been used and even combined before, and there are more than a few train games out there. But Cargotrain takes those simple ingredients and mixes them up into something tasty and fun.

  • Secret Hitler

Some might find a game where one player is literally Hitler offensive. I’m not one of them, and I’m glad, because that would keep me from a great hidden identity game that has tiny bit more structure than other games in that genre. At least for me it makes a huge difference.
