  • SOS Titanic

I imagine that sometimes the pitch for a new board game must sound a lot like the pitch for the weird blockbuster movie of a year. “It’s a Patience game, only you can play it with friends and it’s about rescuing people from the Titanic.” It probably wasn’t an easy sale, but here it is: SOS Titanic, the multiplayer solitaire game with superpowers.

  • Russian Railroads

Russian Railroads is a European optimization game, subtype worker placement. Every game, you try to do better than the one before, optimize your strategy and score a bit higher. But it’s not a typical game of the genre. Where you often have a lack of options in other such games, only one or two routes to victory which you try to use as well as you can, Russian Railroads gives you many different, viable ways to score. Its many moving parts create a fascinating whole that will let you find new ways to a higher score for a long time.

  • Invaders

The date is December 8 2127, and for exactly a year and a day, Earth has been at war. They came from deep space, no one is sure what their plans with Earth are. But we know one thing: those plans don’t involve us.

  • Pandemic Legacy

Legacy games, games where every time you play you make permanent changes to the game, are the big, new thing. Ever since I heard about Risk Legacy, the founder of the genre, I’ve been thinking what other games would work with the addition of Legacy mechanics, and Pandemic was at the top of that list. Now there is Pandemic Legacy, and we all finally get to find out if I was right.

  • Master Thieves

In an age of boardgames made of cardboard, some games stand out for their material. But a real wood cube as game “board” is not the only thing Master Thieves has to offer: you will also find a good amount of strategy and the greatest challenge to your memory and sense of direction I know about in any recent game.

  • Havana

Havana is a card game with some extra goodies. The goal is to restore the city of Havana to its pre-revolution glory. Action cards are a valuable resource because, once discarded, they only come back when you used them all. Turn order play a big role and is not easy to manage. And worst of all, it’s tied to the actions you can take.

  • Swordfish

The swordfish season at the Flemish Cap is seven months long, from April to November. That’s the time you have in Swordfish to build up a fishing fleet and go out to catch fish. Some of you will get rich, others will get wet when their boats go down in a storm. It’s not an easy life as a swordfish fisher.

  • A Fistful of Penguins

If “A Fistful of Penguins” makes you think of a western set in the Antarctic, then you’re in for a disappointment. If you’re looking for a family-friendly dice game, then you could do much worse.
