  • The Gnomes of Zavandor

Zavandor, the land of gem mining. After Mines of Zavandor, Gnomes of Zavandor is the second mining-themed set title in the fantasy world. Unlike its predecessor, Gnomes of Zavandor has a strictly economical engineat its core.

  • Futschikato / Fuji Flush

Our first review of a 2016 Essen game is, by necessity, of a light game. We have to play it a couple of times, after all. Futschikato / Fuji Flush, a card game by Friedemann Friese, is as light as any game we ever reviewed, but nevertheless is a really fun game. That’s all thanks to one small twist: low cards can gang up on high cards. No matter how good your card is, you can never feel safe.

  • Kingdom Builder

In this year’s Spiel des Jahres, the King asks you to construct villages for his Kingdom. But his subjects are not always guided by sanity when they write their wishlist where the villages should go. Some of them have truly special needs, and then they keep contradicting each other. It’s enough to drive a city planer insane.

  • Mafia City

In a city where the law is nothing but letters in a book, where not only city hall but even the police itself are under the control of rivaling gangs, in a city where everyone with a bit of importance is wearing a fedora – that’s where you play Mafia City.

  • Codinca

Abstract games don’t have to be long and complex to be good, Codinca shows that it’s perfectly possible to make am abstract that you can teach in five minutes, play in thirty, and still have a great time the whole time.

  • The Palaces of Carrara

The city of Carrara has been famous for its marble since Roman times. It’s been used, by people who can afford it, all over the empire. In The Palaces of Carrara, you don’t take it quite so far, the furthest your marble travels is about 100km down the coast. But you wouldn’t want it to go further, anyway, because that short distance already gives you enough to consider if you want to win in this game, because for a game of only about 60 minutes, it sure keeps you busy.

  • Coerceo

Abstract strategy games for two players. There are many of them already, you could think that all the good ideas have been done. And then a game like Coerceo comes along, completely redefines how you use the board in a classic black-vs-white abstract game and is all fresh and exciting. You should never consider a genre complete, there are always great ideas still to be dicovered.

  • Sapiens

The year is god-knows-when BCE. The first people are spreading across the plains and forests looking for two things: food and shelter. Their most important tool in this dangerous voyage are Dominoes-like tiles they use to map out the surroundings. Okay, no, they didn’t really do that. You do that when playing Sapiens, map out the territory for your tribe to prosper.
