  • Potion Explosion

The Horribilorum Sorcery Academy for Witty Witches and Wizards, yet another institute of magical learning that not only ignores safety procedures, it’s probably using the handbook to start a fire. This time, students have to sit their Potions exam with ingredients from a rickety, old ingredient dispenser and a professor that actively encourages them to cause explosions in that thing and to drink their own potions they just created to see if they work. Realistically, this game is not about winning, it’s about surviving!

  • Thunderstone Advance: Numenera

Fantasy, in board games, often means “inspired by Dungeons & Dragons”. Until now, that was true for Thunderstone as well. But the Numenera RPG, and the Thunderstone box based on it, offers a very, very different brand of fantasy. You’d be happy to find something as simple as a dragon here.

  • Ad Astra

Ad Astra is not quite a board game, it skips the concept of a game board and makes the table top the playing area. There is some mechanics from Settlers of Catan there, some from Puerto Rico and a bit from Robo Rally, all combined to a delicious mix

  • The Dwarf King

Dwarves, Goblins and Knights are all united in a trick-taking card game that sounds easy and simple, there’s not even a trump colour. But The Dwarf King has changing scoring rules, wacky special cards and the best illustrations I’ve seen in a card game recently.

  • Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island

Beign shipwrecked is bad. Being shipwrecked on a deserted island is worse. Being shipwrecked on the Cursed Island? That sounds like trouble. Enough trouble, actually, that we should all work together. And here we are in Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island, a cooperative adventure game.

  • Istanbul

The second nominee for this year’s Kennerspiel des Jahres, Istanbul makes you run around the bazaar district of the titular city in a desperate search for rubies. Why rubies, you ask? No idea, to be honest, but as the game progresses it turns into a frantic search for your lost assistants, anyway. Leaving your assitants behind to work, then gathering them up again and leaving them somewhere else, that’s the core of Istanbul.

  • Pandemic: On The Brink

Is fighting the same old diseases getting boring? Saving mankind is just another job for you, and you’re looking for a new challenge? Better get your doctor’s bag ready and your syringe disinfected, because humanity is on the brink of destruction, threatened by virulent diseases, mutation and terrorism.

  • Québec

Québec is not only a city in Canada any more, it is now also a game about that city. But where games with city names are often variants of other games with some new pictures, Québec introduces new mechanics and really invents a new game, not just renames it.
