  • Trains

Deck-building was a big game genre the last few years. But pure deck-building is exhausted, every major publisher has a couple of deck.-building games already. But deck-building as a mechanic still has a lot to offer, and incorporating it into a larger game offers many options yet to explore. Trains is one such game that takes deck-building and builds a wider game around it. So build your decks to build your tracks and lay rails across Japan.

  • Mai-Star

Geisha are a fascinating and confusing part of Japanese culture. Women that you pay to be with for their conversational skills, or their talents in the arts, or even for their ability to play games. They are personal entertainers, but with a long history and, to us, strange customes.
Mai-Star, a game about geisha, will probably not do a thing to make you understand them better. But it will entertain you for half an hour, and then maybe for some more.

  • Raid & Trade

World War 3 has come and gone, and to everyone’s surprise we’re not extinct. But the planet is not a great place to live any more, except for those select few that secured a space in the Golden City, the last beacon of civilization in the world. All the wastelanders want to live there, and the players in Raid & Trade actually have the chance to achieve that dream, if they find the right mix between cooperation and ruthlessness.

  • Andromeda

Anyone who grew up with a sibling will know the situation: there is ice cream, or cake, or something to be had, one of you had to split it and the other one would get first pick. As it turns out, that system not only works for ice cream but for exploring space ships as well, because that’s how you get your actions in Andromeda.

  • Robo Rally

Racing games often have a strong feeling of roll your dice and may the luckier one win. Not so Robo Rally. To triumph in this race, you’ll need a good sense of direction and an even better ability at planning your moves.

  • Burger Up

Warning! Do not read this review while hungry. You’re about to read a many words about burgers, which will make you hungry to play Burger Up, but also to go out and eat at that grass-fed beef only burger place across town.

  • Qwixx

The first nominee for this year’s Spiel des Jahres award, a light but clever dice game by Steffen Benndorf. While some luck is obviously involved, there are also decisons to be made at every corner.

  • Witch of Salem

The Witch of Salem is one of many board games set in Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, and its art really makes that world come to life. Four scholars of the paranormal set out to keep the Great Old Ones imprisoned in R’lyeh. Will they succeed?
