    Combining boardgames with mobile apps into a game that people actually want to play is the current Philosophers’ Stone and Holy Grail rolled into one for game designers and publishers. The Philosophers’ Grail, maybe. Previous attempts have had lukewarm success at best. But Alchemists is the first in a new wave of games with companion app, and it might just have found the magic formula how do it right.

  • Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island

    Beign shipwrecked is bad. Being shipwrecked on a deserted island is worse. Being shipwrecked on the Cursed Island? That sounds like trouble. Enough trouble, actually, that we should all work together. And here we are in Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island, a cooperative adventure game.

  • Dixit

    Dixit is a very creative communication game that has you describe and guess at picture cards. It’s much more fun than this description sounds, fun enough for this year’s Spiel des Jahres award.

  • Machi Koro

    City building games don’t have to be big and complex, Machi Koro proves that. All you need to build your city are two dice, some cards and about half an hour of time. You couldn’t take anything away from this game and still call what is left a game. But even being that light, Machi Koro is published and popular in more countries than most games ever see.

But it’s not for you to drink and gain energy for additional actions, it’s another commodity for you to trade in on your quest for rubies. But does coffee really make everything better?

But that’s exactly what you’re going to do in Eight-Minute Empire: carve your name into the world, in mile high letter, in eight to twenty minutes. That’s shorter than your court-appointed painter will take to paint your regal countenance.

  • Keyflower

    In 1620, a ship full of brave meeples set sail to cross the ocean and build a new life in the new world. These meeples who crossed the ocean on the Keyflower built a number of settlements competing for everything, including the buildings their settlements may have. In their first year, these meeples created their new lives.

  • Forbidden Island

    Thousands of years ago, the Archaean empire was at the height of its power. They created four artefacts that could control the very elements. But power, as everyone learns sooner or later, is no guarantee for survival.     Fields of Arle is Uwe Rosenberg’s love letter to the home of his ancestors, East Frisia and especially the village of Arle. It’s a worker placement game that is unusual in not allowing more than two players, but is equally unusual in the number of options you have and factors to consider. It’s a big game, a long game, and a game that brings many aspects of medieval Frisia to life.

  • Russian Railroads

    Russian Railroads is a European optimization game, subtype worker placement. Every game, you try to do better than the one before, optimize your strategy and score a bit higher. But it’s not a typical game of the genre. Where you often have a lack of options in other such games, only one or two routes to victory which you try to use as well as you can, Russian Railroads gives you many different, viable ways to score. Its many moving parts create a fascinating whole that will let you find new ways to a higher score for a long time.

After computer games, conventions and god knows what else, they are also breaking into board and card games. Or are they just selling their name to make their fanbase buy a bad game?

  • Patchwork

    Uwe Rosenberg is well known for his deep, complex games like Agricola, Glass Road or Fields of Arle. But those are not all he does, he’s equally skilled at small and deceptively simple looking games. In this one, you don’t have to feed your starving farmers, you don’t work and pray in a monastery, you don’t even sell your vegetables at the gates of Loyang. All you have to do is simply make a patchwork blanket.
