  • Concordia

The Roman Empire has always been a popular setting for games, so Concordia is not innovative in that respect. But it is a game by Mac Gerdts, so you know it will not be a run-of-the-mill, nothing-new-to-see-here game. Gerdts’s games are special. But even by the high standards he set with Antike, among others, he has outdone himself with Concordia.

  • Oceanos

Jacques Cousteau awakened the fascination for the submarine world in many of us. His film productions present the wonders hidden under the surface of the ocean, and yet they awaken curiosity for more. I think Monsieur Cousteau would approve of the way fellow Frenchman Antoine Bauza presents the underwater world in his game Oceanos: not as a place for warfare, like many games have done before, but as the object of curious discovery.

  • Oss

A game as old as bone. It’s not an expression I get to use a lot, since we review the newest games we can find. But in the case of Oss, it’s not wrong, because Oss is based on the old, old game of Jacks. The game where you throw sheep bones in the air and pick up other sheep bones before you catch the first one again. But don’t worry, Oss is the more hygienic variant of that, and you don’t have to worry about being haunted by ovine spirits, either.

  • Coerceo

Abstract strategy games for two players. There are many of them already, you could think that all the good ideas have been done. And then a game like Coerceo comes along, completely redefines how you use the board in a classic black-vs-white abstract game and is all fresh and exciting. You should never consider a genre complete, there are always great ideas still to be dicovered.

  • Luchador – Mexican Wrestling Dice

Lucha Libre, Mexican free style wrestling, is flashy. It has personality. And it’s very, very emotional. All that can be side about the dice game Luchador as well.

  • Metropolys

Metropolys – easily recognised as one of Ystari’s games by the trademark Y – is an auction game with not too complex rules but some interesting scoring trade-offs. It also features a very unique and appealing artistic style.

  • Höyük

The human race has never been peaceful, competition is written into our genes. Even back in the stone age, when we just started abandoning easily movable tents for more permanent dwellings, there was competition for having the biggest house, highest up the hill. That’s what is happening in Höyük, neolithic clans competing for the finest mansions.
