  • Five Tribes

Bruno Cathala and Days of Wonder take us to Naqala, a magical kingdom straight out of Arabian Nights if Arabian Nights had included meeples. Which it should have. Five Tribes is one of the most talked about games of the last year, and after testing it extensively we understand why.

  • The Gallerist

Once they get into gaming, most people discover their go-to designers at some point, the handful of designers who’s name is enough to make them buy a game. Vital Lacerda is one of my go-to designers, and so it was only with a slight hesitation that I took the big chunk of cash from my wallet to pay for the huge box that is The Gallerist. And I haven’t regretted the decision since, The Gallerist has exactly what I love Vital’s designs for: finely interwoven game mechanics that seem complex at first, maybe even convoluted, but reveal an elegant design underneath and meaningful, multi-dimensional decisions on every turn.

  • Small Star Empires

The final frontier… Space. The last remaining adventure, vast and (mostly) unexplored. We could go on about rogues, treks and storm troopers, towels, the Force and Lord Helmet – but today we would rather focus on a less mainstream but without a doubt worthy item: Milan Tasevski’s short and easy-to-learn, but still very replay-worthy Small Star Empires.

  • Elder Sign

The city of Arkham just doesn’t get a break. When it’s not monsters in the street, it’s a Great Old One at the museum. And it’s the same people that have to mop up the mess again and play YAHTZEE AGAINST CTHULHU!
Yeah, sounds weird, I know. But bear with me, it’s actually a lot of fun.

  • Mundus Novus

Mundus Novus is, despite its trade with the new world theme, a light set collection game with a complex(ish) trading mechanic and a bit of card based progress.

  • Sanssouci

Sanssouci, a palace in Potsdam near Berlin, Germany. It’s famous for it’s beautiful gardens, and those gardens are what Michael Kiesling wants you to recreate in the game named Sanssouci. But it’s not about their beauty, their symmetry or even their completion. All you care for is: how far down the garden paths can someone walk?

  • Kalua

It’s not easy being a god. Unless you already established monotheism, then it’s all easy sailing. But to get there, some hard work will be necessary. Summoning tornados and tsunamis, ensuring a good harvest for your people and fighting the eternal danger of atheism, it’s all in a days work for a god.

  • 7 Wonders

Despite what the title implies, 7 Wonders is not a civilisation building game but a very strategic card game that only reveals it’s depth after a few plays, and then some. Enough to win awards left, right and centre. And the best part? You can play in 30 minutes!
